BUILT-IN
2018. SITE-SPECIFIC MODULAR INSTALLATION AND ONGING SERIES OF COLLABORATIVE EVENTS AT NAVEL, LOS ANGELES.

++++++++++

Built-In is a collaborative project that I initiated at Navel; it takes the form of a modular structure with a dynamic and malleable design for presentations, screenings, lectures, performances and other forms of public engagement. The project is, in essence, relational: it is a site-specific design proposition, an ensemble of space dividers, mirrors and scrims that complement the exisiting features of Navel, and bring attention to the relation between virtual and physical space, individual elements and collectivity, minds and bodies. The project consists in an ongoing series of events organized in collaboration with artists, academics and others who are interested in using the structure as a platform to present work that relates to the organization of living beings in physical space — whether this is done by revisiting history, acting in the present, or envisioning possible futures.

Since May 2018, two events took place. The first one, organized by Hunter Shaw, brought artists who address “real life” issues such as infrastructure, building, land use, and environmental stewardship. The second event, which I organized, included works that examine the intangible implications of highly organized and codified architecture, from the mundane materiality of a home to the extraordinary logistics of Biosphere 2.
